Sons of Settlers is a folk band based in Cape Town, South Africa. Their style draws from their diverse range of influences locally and internationally, and they embrace this juxtaposition in their approach and sound. They combine African rhythms with Western melodies, hint towards Kwaito beats while swooning melodically in old 50s crooner styles. They strive to take the essence of what makes a good song and turn it into something that gets you moving.
“In choosing our band name we were looking for something that would signify what unifies us as individuals. Being part of the white minority in South Africa we are all obviously from colonial decent, we have Dutch, French and British heritage, but our families have been in South Africa so many generations that we have no ancestral rights or connections to Europe. We are naturalized white Africans.”
Highlights: Sons of Settlers have just returned from a very successful three-month promotional tour of Germany and Switzerland. Find a link in this document to a video they made of the experience and follow the “Previous Gigs” link to see where they performed.
The band is made up of members from the now dormant bands New Holland and Foto Na Dans. When these musical outfits seized to be a creative outlet, the group now known as Sons of Settlers was formed to keep making beautiful original music.
