Hailing from Melbourne, Lydia Goldthorpe was trained to sing by her mother from birth. Throughout her childhood, music felt like her primary language and most natural mode of communication.
An artistic soul through and through, Lydia also trained in classical ballet for 15 years. Whilst songwriting began to come naturally through her adolescent years, she felt her messages lacked the grit of life experience and hence packed her bags to head to Europe. It was there that she began studying jazz piano and exploring French classical piano whilst immersing herself in German electronic, French pop and Icelandic soundscapes, all the while slowly collecting the puzzle pieces that would form the basis of her own sound.
Returning from overseas with the desire to songwrite whilst exposed to the influences of the natural world, Lydia moved to coastal Queensland to be surrounded by Australian wilderness with little else but her piano. It was here that she created the early stages of her debut EP ‘Simple Local’. Once its structure took form, she returned to her hometown of Melbourne to refine and complete the project with local artist & producer, Hayden Calnin.
In her debut EP ‘Simple Local’, Lydia links each track to an accompanying emotion, with each song telling separate stories identifying to a path back to self-discovery.
Lydia’s live performances embody an emotionally charged, yet beautifully vulnerable urgency that permeates.
Her influences from broad facets of the musical spectrum sculpt Lydia’s cosmopolitan style. Portishead meets Tori Amos meets Debussy. Hypnotic vocals drape over minimalist piano, cinematic strings are set amongst gutsy rhythms and beats where balance is found between contrasts of light and shade and between real and digital instruments.
Lydia’s debut single is ‘Secret Sculptures Go’ and her highly anticipated debut EP ‘Simple Local’ is available now.
