Ian Emes was the original Pink Floyd animator and creator of the Dark Side of The Moon concert films. The first ever synchronised interpretations of Pink Floyd music, Ian’s ground-breaking visuals were projected onto the famous circular screen – aka Mr Screen – at Wembley Arena in 1974.
Having previously used lighting effects for their performances, in 1972 Pink Floyd discovered Ian’s experimental animated film One of These Days, and thus found a way to expand the immersive impact of their concerts - ushering in a new era of concert technology not just for the band but for rock music as a whole.
As well as creating animations for other world-famous musicians, Ian continued to work with Pink Floyd, his animation a becoming founding style for the band. His Marching Crosses sequence for Us and Them was a source of inspiration for Roger Waters’ Marching Hammers – which Ian projected onto the real Berlin wall in 1990 when shooting sequences for The Wall - Live in Berlin, Roger Waters’ first solo performance after splitting from the band. Ian’s films were seen by over 300,000 people, then the biggest concert audience of all time.
In 2016 Ian’s iconic Time sequence was re-mastered for Waters’ epic projections in his sell-out Us and Them World Tour. The same year, Ian’s One of These Days animation revisited the circular screen in the Roman amphitheatre in David Gilmour’s Live at Pompei tour.
Ian’s last collaboration was his feature-length interpretation of Pink Floyd’s ultimate album The Endless River. His works have recently toured the world with the record-breaking Pink Floyd –Their Mortal Remains Exhibition. Ian garnered numerous international awards, including three BAFTAS and an OSCAR Nomination.
