‘Someone Just Pressed Pause’ is The Broken Orchestra’s response to the unchartered territory we have been thrust into. While the news focuses on the fear of an unknown threat, the song, written and recorded remotely in lockdown by the band and guest vocalist and lyricist TinB, aimed to inspire us to think of the positives, the opportunities that an enforced break from our hectic lives could bring. But what happened next was beyond any of the band’s expectations.
The track was quickly picked up by regional BBC radio in The Broken Orchestra’s home of East Yorkshire and by independent specialist shows up and down the country. Bloggers, broadcasters and magazines in the UK and beyond picked up on the track and BBC Radio 6Music’s Tom Robinson championed it over the weeks that followed leading to multiple national plays on the station, culminating in the ultimate accolade as one of 6Music’s Tracks of The Year, alongside the likes of Tame Impala, Ghostpoet, Laura Marling and Run The Jewels.
Explaining the decision to award an unsigned independent act the ‘Track of The Year So Far’ title, BBC Radio 6 Music presenter Tom Robinson, commented that it was:
“The most positive, practical and poetic, yet unsentimental response I’ve heard so far to the crisis that’s enveloped all our lives”
Most rewarding of all, the track is creating a genuine impact amongst music fans, with many taking to social media to show their appreciation, including:
