The Keepers 'Another Night' c/w 'Cerise'
I'm ashamed to admit that until this disc landed in my hands I was unfamiliar with Northampton's own The Keepers. Thankfully this anomaly has been rectified with their latest offering, the two track 'Another Night' single. The title track is the natural successor to The Smiths' 'How Soon is Now?' and it's a song that takes the listener on a journey to explore the loneliness of nocturnal exploits and if any solace can be garnered from such expeditions then it's in such songs. With the brutally honest lyric: 'It's just another night, I'll be standing on my own in the pub like last night' it takes a real artist to turn such everyday events into poetry. The Keepers have a sound that is both retro and futuristic: it borrows the best of 60s psych-beat but frames it in a modern song structure. With some fine organ performed by vocalist Jordan Jones 'Another Night' is four and a half minutes of pure pop psychedelia before guitarist Liam Taylor whisks us away in a vortex of glorious feedback.
It's the second track 'Cerise' where we find The Keepers at their most experimental. Opening with some fine skank guitar which is drenched in wonderful reverb (reminiscent of the late Augustus Pablo), the song has a real dreamlike quality both musically and lyrically. In a beat we shift from reggae to rock which is no mean feat and credit must be given to the rhythm section who provide a solid foundation over which the organ and electric piano float. With a hypnotic bassline the song plays out like a surreal dream, one from which you won't want to wake. This single works because of the fusion of psychedelic music with real lyrical themes. While played and performed with originality the psychedelia contained herein will be familiar to the musical savvy but what's unusual is that it doesn't lead to some lyrical nonsense but rather it's married to an everyday reality to which we can all relate. The Keepers are music's best keep secret but this is sure to change if they keep producing work of this quality. Sweet dreams.
