'Skirting Heresy' at Lynn Minster
"Skirting Heresy" by Wall Street journalist and playwright Elizabeth Macdonald is a play about Margery of Lynn (c1373-c1443). Macdonald flew in to watch her Lynn premiere from her home in New York City and celebrated the sell out event with cast, director and band into the early hours in a bar on a Lynn street Margery would have walked 600 years ago.
Margery lived all her long life on Lynn waterfront - her merchant father was 5 times mayor and MP of Lynn - and wrote the first autobiography in English. She was repeatedly accused of heresy and very nearly burned for it. She broke many of the bounds imposed on women of her day by travelling the world and practising a Christianity she was not allowed as a woman to preach.
The Penland Phezants were proud to be asked to create the score (9 songs) for this play and perform them live as the band. Read all about the exciting production here.
An album of the play songs and other songs about Margery's life an times is out now. Hear it on Soundcloud.
