MARK NEVIN - MY UNFASHIONABLE OPINION

Fifth Solo outing from main Fairground Attraction.

This has none of the Fairground Attraction glibness. Nevin has been through a lot since 1987. He’s now a Harley Street psychotherapist, but fortunately he can’t stop writing, delivering songs of hope, joy, ironic insight and spectacular humanity. Flanked by Hammond organ, vibraphone, marimba and horns, you know how this sounds; like an ultra-polished, bluesy pub band, with Colin Vearncombe - or Ray Winstone - on vocals. The title track sets the tone; social media is a baying mob, stamping out individual thought, “So get your PHD in similarity and never laugh again…” Sing Anyway is an epiphany about getting through depression, so involving your heart bursts at the dazzling, brass bright chorus. And Curly Wurly Boy details a career’s advisors factory job suggestion: “They said the wage was fair/and there’s a canteen there/And a pension… Well, I ain’t gonna.” Thank God for that.
