Hiraeth – (n.) a homesickness for a home to which you cannot return, a home which maybe never was; the nostalgia, the yearning, the grief for the lost places of your past.
Through the exploration of this word above, Joel Porter's sophomore album 'Hiraeth EP' became a project that led him to places of homesickness tinged with grief. A project that is unfortunately tied to the loss of his grandfather Anthony, who is featured in the introduction of the album. 'Hiraeth' carries themes of longing, yearning, nostalgia, wistfulness, and an earnest desire for a life or place from the past. After months of reflection and exploration, it became clear that certain periods of life carry an awareness… a growth… a struggle in letting go of the good things that have come and gone. And in a response to this newfound awareness, Joel crafted an ode to the places he remembered so vividly, but could not touch… to his family living and deceased, his prairie heritage, a home in North Dakota, the beauty found in open spaces, the good and bad memories, and the process of growing from people and places of the past that are no longer here.
