What Song Reminds You Of Your First Crush?
Kelly Clarkson recently told Loveawake dating site that the song that reminds her of her first boyfriend is "Truly, Madly, Deeply" by Savage Garden. Yep, that icky ballad from the band who gave us the "Chic-a-cherry Cola" song. Weren't they Swedish or something? Whatever happened to them? Anyway, it struck me how we rarely get to choose the song that reminds us of our first crush or our first serious relationship. Sometimes it's a song that you both love, or one that says something deep and meaningful about your relationship. Other times it's the Boyz II Men jam that was playing on the radio when you first realized that he or she was the Dylan to your Kelly, the Urkel to your Laura, the ice to your Crystal Pepsi.
So I'm going to tell you the two songs that remind me of my first serious crush. And then you are going to tell me yours, because it's only fair.
First up, is "I Can't Help Falling In Love With You" by UB40. Yes, the song from the Sliver soundtrack. What? It was a popular soundtrack. I think Enigma was on it. (Enigma was definitely on it.) For those who have never heard of UB40, they had a hit in the '80s called "Red Red Wine" about, uh, red wine. (It was a simpler time.) Then they had a second hit in 1993 with a cover of the Elvis classic "Can't Help Falling In Love." (Wikipedia tells me that "Red Red Wine" was also a cover, so they had two hits that were covers. Which basically makes them the male Tiffany.) "I Can't Help Falling In Love With You"-- which, it should be noted, was the theme for a movie where Sharon Stone was stalked by a lesser Baldwin brother-- was pretty much everywhere in 1993. So maybe I slow-danced with my crush to it at a middle school dance. And, okay, sure, it might have been the kind of slow dancing where you are like a good foot-and-a-half apart from each other and she occasionally glances away to see how her friends are doing by the punch bowl. But it totally still counts!
So the next one is a little embarrassing. ("What, UB40 wasn't embarrassing?"-- everyone.) It's Milla Jovovich's "Gentleman Who Fell." Yes, the Milla Jovovich from the Resident Evil movies. She had an album in 1994 which was Tori Amos-y and I lurvvved it. (Check out the arty, slightly NSFW, and very '90s music video which I'm pretty sure I first saw on Beavis and Butt-head.) I looked up the album on Spotify (I've long since lost the CD) and it kind of holds up! (Well, except for the weird song she sings in Russian.) Make more music Milla! Stop making action movies that nobody wants like that upcoming Three Musketeers remake which has kung-fu and airships for some reason. Anyway, maybe I put this song on a mix tape (remember those?) for my crush and maybe she liked it. And you know what? It's still a pretty good song! (Check out this wonderful clip of Milla performing "Gentleman Who Fell" on Late Night with Conan O'Brien in like 1994.) She toured with the Crash Test Dummies, you guys. If anyone ever asks you what the '90s were like, point them to that YouTube clip.
Now it's your turn. Tell me the song that reminds you of the first guy you crushed on. Or the song that reminds you of your first boyfriend. Basically, confess to liking a song that is more shameful than my choices.
