INSIDE THE KETE HEART, AN ALBUM DEDICATED TO THE ANCESTORS
During the twentieth century in Uganda, at the height of the colonial era, a woman called Muhumusa raised her voice in favour of the freedom for Africans. She was made a prisoner and, in support of her, a secret language was created, which used drums to exchange messages among her followers. This language received the name of Nyahbinghi, which means ‘freedom for the black’, and three types of drum were used to create it, each one with a well-defined role and meaning. The Pope Smasher drum, known also as Bass or Thunder, represents breathing; the FUNDE drum represents the heartbeat. Breathing and heartbeat give rise to life, although a third element is needed, conscience, which is represented by the Kete drum. The need to talk about life experiences, reflecting upon my true learning process after thirty-two years of existence, the will to recapitulate and synthesize my inner self, brought me to create ‘Inside the kete heart’. This project has been gestated for nine months, since the death of my grandmother to the birth of my first offspring. ‘Inside the kete heart’ is a being devoid of body, pure and spiritual, which summarizes the qualities and ideas that define Rampalion philosophy. Ten songs, ten concepts I consider basic to live in communion with my fellow man and the planet; the pillars, the principles. The kete drum, as a channel for invocation and ancestral link, is still in force nowadays in its mission of manifesting conscience, and, as an instrument that guides meditation, in the inner journey towards the discovery of what defines us since the beginning. The drum peal has the capacity to make the superfluous vanish, leaving us only with those things that are of weight. The awareness of the heartbeat, of the breathing and of the conscience ceasing, in order to welcome a new life to complete the cycle…the circular membrane of the kete explains it. The circular itinerary of life is what this album is about; and each song, each concept within it, from Ancestors to Hope, a link in the chain of this complete, never ending cycle.
