Mike Barson is one of the greatest English songwriters ever. In fact, one of the great songwriters any country has birthed, but i mention England because part of what make Mr Barson’s songs so brilliant is how they modulate their location - working class London as the 70s turn into the 80s - into gorgeous, hilarious, insightful, indelible songs. Don’t be distracted by the Nutty Antics, Madness were and are an important band. OK?!
My Girl has always been one of my favourites of theirs. Lovely music of course but really an outstanding lyric. Everything i aspire to in writing words is elegantly achieved here. it’s truthful, wry, poetic, candid and beautiful. and no one else could have written it.
So i made a wobbly version which i really hope you’ll enjoy!
